Most beginner guides tell you to "click UP if you think it'll rise" — then stop. Nobody explains how to think about it.

I lost ฿40,000 in my first four months trading by feel. When I became consistently profitable, one thing changed: I traded what the chart said, not what I hoped it would do.

This guide doesn't just explain — it lets you interact: a clickable Pattern Gallery, a draggable RSI Gauge, a Bollinger Band Visualizer with 5 modes, and a Setup Simulator that scores your trade idea before you press the button.

⚠️ Risk notice: Technical analysis improves probability — it doesn't guarantee outcomes. All trading involves significant risk of loss. This content is educational only.

Best Trading Hours for SEA Traders

Before reading any chart, know which markets are open right now. Open markets = higher volume = more reliable patterns. Dead markets = noise = don't trade.

Tokyo 02:00–11:00 BKK
London 14:00–23:00 BKK
New York 19:00–04:00 BKK
London+NY Overlap 19:00–23:00 BKK
Loading time…
Bangkok time (GMT+7)StatusBest for
02:00–11:00🟡 Tokyo openJPY pairs, Gold, Crypto — decent volume
11:00–14:00🔴 Dead zoneDon't trade — Tokyo closed, Europe not open yet
14:00–19:00🟢 London openEUR/USD, GBP pairs — high volume, clean patterns
19:00–23:00🟢🟢 London+NY OverlapPeak hours for all traders — highest volume globally
23:00–02:00🟡 NY aloneUSD pairs — still decent, but quieter than Overlap

💡 For traders based in GMT+7: The London+NY Overlap (19:00–23:00 Bangkok time) is the global sweet spot — highest liquidity, most institutional activity, and the cleanest pattern signals of the day. If you can only trade one window, make it this one.

Support & Resistance — The Foundation of Everything

Before looking at any pattern or indicator, know where price sits on its map. Support and Resistance are that map.

Example: Support and Resistance zones on a price chart (SVG)
RESISTANCE — price rejected here 3× SUPPORT — price bounced here 3× 📌 Role-reversal rule: Broken support → new resistance Broken resistance → new support
1

Open H1 or H4 chart

Higher timeframe = stronger level. An H1 S/R zone matters far more than anything you draw on M5.

2

Find levels where price reversed repeatedly

At least 2–3 touches. The more touches, the stronger the level. One touch alone is not enough.

3

Draw zones, not single lines

Price doesn't reverse at an exact pixel. Draw a box roughly 5–10 pips wide — that's your "reaction zone."

4

Remember the role-reversal rule

When price breaks through support, that level often becomes the new resistance. These flip points are some of the best entry setups.

💡 Round numbers in Asian markets: Psychological round numbers carry extra weight in Asian sessions — EUR/USD 1.1000, Gold $2,000, Bitcoin $100,000. These are watched globally and tend to produce strong reactions, especially during the London open when many GMT+7 traders are still at their desks.

Pattern Gallery — Click to Explore

Click any pattern card below to see its anatomy, what it signals, and how to trade it on IQ Option.

⚠️ Golden rule: Never trade a pattern in isolation. You need context (H1 trend direction) and at least one indicator confirming before entering. The Setup Simulator below will help you evaluate this.

Moving Average — Your Trend Compass

A Moving Average plots the average price over a set number of periods. It tells you which direction the trend is heading and whether a pullback has reached a good entry point.

TypeHow it worksCharacterBest for
SMAEqual weight to all periodsSmoother, slower signalsIdentifying main trend direction
EMAMore weight to recent pricesMore responsive, fasterEntry timing, intraday trading

Recommended settings: EMA 20 (short-term), EMA 50 (medium-term), SMA 200 (long-term baseline)

✅ My most-used setup: Price above both EMA 20 and EMA 50 → price pulls back to touch EMA 20 → Bullish Pin Bar or Bullish Engulfing appears there → enter UP immediately after the candle closes.

RSI Gauge — Reading Market Heat

RSI measures how fast and hard price has moved in a given direction. Scale: 0–100. Default period: 14. Drag the slider below to see what each zone means and what to do there.

0 30 50 70 100 50

Middle zone — no clear bullish or bearish edge. Be cautious entering trades here without a clear trend from the MA on H1.

⚠️ Most common RSI misconception: Overbought does not mean "sell now." In a strong uptrend, RSI can stay above 70 for weeks. RSI is a caution signal — always wait for a pattern confirmation before acting on it.

RSI Divergence — The Signal Most Traders Miss

Bollinger Bands — Price Extremes Visualized

Three lines: 20-period SMA in the middle, upper and lower bands 2 Standard Deviations away. Price stays inside the bands ~95% of the time. Switch between modes below to see what each situation looks like.

Setup Simulator — 3-Layer Confirmation

I never enter a trade on a single signal — at least 3 things must align. Use this simulator to score your current trade idea before touching the button.

💡 My rule: If the simulator doesn't hit 80% — I don't enter. Sounds rigid. But this discipline lifted my win rate from ~40% to 60%+. Many times I could see a setup but one layer disagreed. I waited. Usually the right call.

Pre-Trade Checklist — Before Every Entry

Run through this before every trade. If you can't check every box — don't enter.

All conditions met — your setup is ready to trade.

Most Common Mistakes Traders Make

1. Trading during the dead zone (11:00–14:00 Bangkok / 04:00–07:00 GMT)
Tokyo is closed. Europe hasn't opened. Volume is thin. Patterns form but don't follow through. I stopped trading this window entirely and win rate improved immediately.

2. Revenge trading after losses
Lose → increase size to recover → lose again → increase more. This loop cost me ฿8,000 in a single day. My rule: three consecutive losses = done for the day. No exceptions.

3. Switching indicators every week
The problem is rarely the indicator — it's discipline. Choose 2–3 indicators and commit to them seriously for at least 3 months before judging whether they work.

4. Ignoring the economic calendar
US NFP, Fed rate decisions, CPI prints — these cause violent, unpredictable price spikes where every pattern and indicator breaks down. Check the calendar before every session.

5. Mismatching expiry to timeframe
M15 pattern + 5-minute expiry = no time for the trade to develop. Rule: expiry ≥ 3× the analysis timeframe. M15 pattern → 45-minute expiry. H1 pattern → 3+ hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to learn chart analysis?
With 30–60 minutes of focused daily practice on a demo account, most people develop a working grasp within 4–6 weeks. The benchmark before trading real money: two consecutive weeks of net profit on demo — not just feeling ready.
Do these patterns work on crypto as well as Forex?

The principles are identical. But crypto has much higher volatility than major Forex pairs.

Bollinger Bands will be wider. RSI hits overbought/oversold more often and stays there longer. News events (regulatory decisions, exchange listings) impact crypto far more violently. Learn on Forex first, then apply to crypto.

Can I use Bollinger Bands and RSI together?
Yes — they complement each other perfectly. BB tells you where price is in the range. RSI tells you how strong momentum is. Price at Lower Band + RSI at 28 + Bullish Pin Bar = three independent measures agreeing = strong setup.
Why do chart patterns look different on real account vs. demo?
The price data is identical — IQ Option uses the same charts for both. What changes is your psychology: real money causes hesitation, revenge trading, and abandoning setups mid-candle. That's exactly why consistent demo profitability is the benchmark before switching to real.
Should I change RSI from the default period 14?
Period 14 is standard precisely because most traders use it — overbought/oversold levels reflect market-wide behavior. You can experiment (period 9 = faster signals, period 21 = smoother), but backtest any change before going live.
